The Asian Mini Skirt Has Many Cultural Influences

By

The clothing that we wear today is a result of many cultural influences, both from our own and those of our ancestors. Our clothing can also be influenced by styles that have been adopted from other cultures, just as Asian mini skirts have adopted the overall format from the modern American culture. It is important to realize, though, that though an Asian mini skirt will share the same design as their American counterparts, their style will have many traditional aspects from older Asian cultures. This balance will all depend on the area where the Asian mini skirt will be made. The many cultures throughout Asia have heavy diversity, and the local culture of different areas may influence the overall look of the skirt.

Japanese culture has followed the same traditions for thousands of years; indeed, until the twentieth century, when they decided to become more involved with the western world, Japanese culture had changed very little. Japanese culture is built upon conservation, tradition, and honor. The most lavish style of traditional Japanese clothing for women is known as the kimono, which is used even today for special ceremonies, like weddings. This kimono is known to be very heavy because it has so much fabric incorporated in the entire outfit. The number of layers associated with this ensemble is also staggering; in some kimonos, there are up to ten layers of fabric, assuming that the girl wearing it would prefer to have the most traditionally accurate kimono.

As they were designing these Asian mini skirts, the goal was to be reminiscent of the kimono, without having nearly as much fabric involved. Japan is situated in a place that has a cooler climate, but there are warmer days; even if the weather is not too hot, the heat from the excessive crowds of the city could make it uncomfortable for anyone. The Japanese designs that go into these Asian mini skirts would be a floral design on top of a very bright color, which would be more traditionally accurate to the Japanese culture. There are Chinese elements that may go into the making of Asian mini skirts as well. Since China is very enthusiastic about American culture, they would typically be anticipating the release of such clothing; once they acquire it, they would also like to incorporate their own designs into the American design.

One of the characteristics about Chinese culture in attire is the raised collar on their dresses, which would support a more firm and streamlined appearance to the Asian mini skirts. The styling of their traditional dresses comes from the women's cheongsam, which, in comparison to the kimono, would be much more minimalist in terms of fabric. The sleeves of the cheongsam go down to just below the shoulder, making it easier to incorporate more of the traditional design into the design of Asian mini skirts. Asian mini skirts are popular all over the world.

They have managed to mix cultures from far and wide, and they have found a combination that can work for just about every woman in the world. I once attended a wedding where an American woman was getting married to a Chinese man. The bride received a gift from her new mother in law; it was an Asian mini skirt that was modeled after the traditional cheongsam. Even though she was not Chinese, the skirt looked very good on her. The main color of the skirt was pink, and it was covered with designs of red and white lotus flowers. It had very strong cultural ties to China and America, and the combination looked excellent. Every woman at the wedding wished that they had their own Asian mini skirt.
