More to Becoming a Calgary Nanny

A good friend of mine recently decided to become a nanny. She graduated from college with a respectable degree, but decided shortly thereafter that she didn’t like her major enough to actually find a job in it. Having just finished four years in school, she also did not want to return for more schooling. However, she is very good with kids, so she decided to become a Calgary nanny. Her reasoning behind this was that it would give her practical knowledge that she would need to become a mother one day while getting paid for her time. To her, it seemed like the perfect solution.

Little did she know, there was much more to becoming a Calgary nanny than she had thought. First off, my friend needed to decide what kind of nanny she wanted to become. There are two basic types of Calgary nanny: those that live in the home with the family and those that do not. Each situation has its own advantages and disadvantages. Living in the home with the family meant that going home would not mean leaving work. Everything from eating meals to enjoying an evening of television entertainment would be done with the family. This works very well if you get along with the family; however, if you do not have similar personalities then it can be quite the challenge. The advantage to living with the family means, though, that there is no search for an apartment or worrying about setting up utilities and paying bills.

Nannies that live outside the home of their employer need to worry about all these things, which can be quite stressful if you have not lived in the city (or country) previously. There is one grand advantage to living outside the family’s home, however. This advantage is that once you have clocked out for the day, there is little chance of a last minute call to come back to work. My friend, being the girl that she is, decided that she would like a situation where she would live in the home with the family. The next challenge for my friend was in getting all the proper certifications to become a Calgary nanny. Professional caregivers are required to have certain certifications before they can begin their work.

For my friend, this meant that she needed to take classes in first aid, CPR and the proper way to take care of children. Many different organizations offer these types of classes; however, she needed to make sure that she would be able to complete them before her job was set to begin. The CPR class, in particular, requires several hours over the course of many days to complete as she not only had to complete the courses for adult CPR but also become certified in child and infant CPR. (Child and infant CPR are similar to, but not the same as adult CPR. It is for this reason that both are required.) Also helpful were classes in child development including nutrition and how to properly discipline children.

My friend willingly took these classes as she knew they would greatly help her in her work. There were several other things that my friend did before becoming a Calgary nanny. She was hired by an organization that placed her with a family in the area. While she has discovered that being a Calgary nanny is certainly not easy, she does love what she is doing. She has grown to love the children that she is caring for and is sad knowing that her time with them will soon come to an end. However, she thinks that she might sign up to work with another family in the near future. She really loves being a Calgary nanny.
