How to Run Successful Public Relations Campaigns
62As a small business owner, I am constantly looking for ways to expand and grow. Running your own business is never what you expect it will be. I started off teaching natural childbirth classes to expecting couples, and I'm now offering labor doula services as well. I live in an area with a high volume of young families, and I thought that I'd be able to find clients easily. However, this has not been the case at all. I'm lucky to get one couple in each class I schedule right now, and my doula clients are few and far-between.
I've decided to run my own little public relations campaign to see how I can promote my services to my target audience. I suspect that my lack of clientele is directly related to how the public views natural childbirth, and I want to see if I can start to change that view in order to get more business. After doing a little research on how to run successful public relations campaigns, I feel I am ready to proceed. Here are the steps I intend to take in order to carry out my own campaign. First, I'll need to do some research and gather information about my potential clients and their views. I'm going to create a survey and advertise it via social media, blogs, and word-of-mouth. I'll offer a small incentive for completing the survey.
The survey will be geared towards couples of child-bearing age who either are pregnant, or who intend to become pregnant within the next year. Questions will include basics such as age, education level, and income, as well as more abstract concepts such as how they view natural birth and why they would or would not choose it. Next, I'll analyze the information I collect in my survey in order to determine what exactly is preventing me from getting clients. I'll look for trends in demographics and attitudes to see if there are specific audiences I should be targeting. This will help me define realistic objectives for my campaign. Successful public relations campaigns require the publics and stakeholders to be identified.
I'll complete this process next, making sure to include those who are latent, aware, and active. Knowing who I will be communicating with will help me create a successful plan of action. The next step in creating public relations campaigns is to develop a strategy for your campaign. This is probably the most important step, since it connects all of your research and preparation with an executable plan of action. It's hard to predict exactly what my strategy will be, but I imagine it will involve spreading the word about how drugs can affect labor as well as the benefits of natural childbirth. Strategies would be rendered useless without tactics. After I have a clearly defined strategy, I'll decide which tactics to use in order to accomplish my strategy. This may involve creating and distributing media to hospitals and clinics, spreading information via social media, and maintaining a blog or website.
Another important aspect of successful public relations campaigns is setting a strict budget and timescale. Establishing my budget beforehand will help me know what I can and can't do, and it will also allow me to allocate money towards specific projects. My timescale will help me stay on track while still fulfilling my other day-to-day obligations. After I have begun implementing my strategy through various tactics, the evaluation process can begin. Evaluation is the final step in any public relations campaign, and should be done both during the campaign and after its completion. Evaluating my campaign will help me to know if I have accomplished my goals. Hopefully, this evaluation will show a change in the way natural childbirth is viewed in my area and an increase in clientele over time. If you own a business and are looking for a way to expand, consider running your own public relations campaign. The process can be very eye-opening and helps you connect with potential clients. At the very least, you'll gain valuable knowledge about your target market.
